Step 3: Notice red banner that says “Validation failed: Name already used as a child of this taxon’s parent”
I assume the species is directly under the genus. It seems like the system always gives an error for this and you have to trick it.
What do you mean by this? I assume the genus you refer to is Solenopsis, but what species are you referring to? I did not mention a species, only a genus and a complex
The species Solenopsis fugax is the taxon bearing the same name as the complex you want to curate.

You’ll want to move species out of the complex before dissolving it, I believe. @thebeachcomber should be awake soon to advise.
yes I would try moving the species S. fugax and regrafting it directly to the genus first (ditto the other species in the complex), then re-try the swap
odd or unexpected behaviour seems to disproportionately occur when setting up swaps that involve infrageneric taxa

Maybe move the species temporarily under a different genus.
What genus could be used here without creating a disruption?
That should work in theory, but then we are talking about 2 back to back moves of a species with over 1K obs, and putting the species in the wrong genus will create weird disagreements
I don’t expect any problems. The species IDs wouldn’t be affected, and neither the ones of the temporary parent (at least not with IDs on the observations). I think I did this a few times when I ran into similar situations.
Wouldn’t moving the species into a different genus mean IDs of the genus now disagree with the species? And also cause some issues with the names?
I don’t think. At any rate you will move the species back to the correct genus right after the swap.
I am having the same issue with changing a species’ parent from a complex to the genus. The complex and species share the same name and generate the same error insectobserver123 posted above:
(I’m trying to move the species back to being a direct child of the genus so that the complex can be deactivated.)
@tiwane Can staff take a look at this? There are pending taxon changes that cannot be made due to this issue
