I wouldn’t say this springtail is unexpectedly cute, but I would say that it was unexpected that I managed to find the little guy and get a good shot of him!

I find these fungivorous Damaeus mites unexpectedly cute since I found out they carry debris on their backs, apparently known as ‘crud hats’, which help to camouflage them from predators as they move so slowly. For years I have seen them on my fungal specimens, without paying them much attention, but now they bring me joy when I pick up a mushroom and see their elaborate disguises.

It’s dead, yes, but beautiful. I found its eyes to be incredibly cute and the same goes for the pretty patterns on its wings. Unexpectedly cute, because I wasn’t expecting to see it lying on the road!
