Unsubscribing from Posts Does Not Work

Platform: website (desktop and mobile)
Browser: all tested (Firefox, Chrome, and Edge)

Selecting “Unsubscribe” at the bottom of posts (such as journals, flags, and blog posts) does not stop me from getting comment notifications from that thread on my homepage feed. Instead, whenever anyone adds a new comment, it spams whatever the last comment was before I unsubscribed. The spam can be very annoying.

I’ve encountered this issue consistently since at least 2023 whenever I try to unsubscribe from a thread. Please let me know if you need additional information or need help replicating the bug.

Thank you!
Alie

I was getting a lot of notifications because another member was ID’ing the same species. I muted that person and no longer saw notifications.

Not sure if that will help:)

I’ve seen it happen with blog posts, but not with the other posts, but I’ll try and test it out today to see if I can replicate.

Thank you, but that is not the same issue that I’m having.

Are you able to share URLs of specific posts where this happens to you via direct message here? I suspect only some are affected by this. I can’t consistently replicate on our test server.

Here are a few threads where I remember encountering the bug. As far as I can tell, this happens consistently every time for me.

In the most recent example, the following post keeps popping up over and over again in my feed. This was the last post just before I unsubscribed from the thread.

@humanbyweight - I’m definitely sorry this is happening to you (I imagine it’s a bit irritating), and hopefully they can figure out what’s going on. But at least it’s a kind of funny bug!

User: Please unsubscribe me from further updates to this thread.
Program: Okay, I’ll just send you the same old update over and over.

It’s obviously not quite the same, but it reminds me a bit of the Cat Facts text meme.

This happens to me too. I just gave up. :disappointed:

When I use my account on our test server and try subscribing and unsubscribing to those posts, then use another test account to add a comment, I can’t replicate - I get no notification on my dashboard. This doesn’t happen with every post you’ve unsubscribed from, correct? Just some?

I think it’s all of them? It’s hard for me to quantify, since I wouldn’t know whether anyone else left a comment if the button works correctly.

@humanbyweight can you confirm that these notifications only appear in your dashboard and not, say, in the header notifications?

And, are you seeing that after clicking “More” a few times? Or is it appearing on the first page of results even though that comment you’re getting notified about was created a while ago? I am guessing it’s the latter, but I just want to be sure I understand the problem.

Yes, the posts only show up on the dashboard and not in the notifications icon.

If I click the “More” button a few times on the dashboard, I can still find the same post from earlier this week.

This happened to me back in December with this blog post: https://www.inaturalist.org/posts/103206-inaturalist-and-karma-a-new-way-to-support-biodiversity

I commented on the post which subscribed me. But after getting a half dozen or so notifications of subsequent comments, I realized I wasn’t really interested in the conversation so I unsubscribed (or unfollowed, whichever the case may be).

But comments to that post kept cropping up in my notifications. I double checked that I had unfollowed and I had. The comments kept showing up at the top of my notifications and I finally realized that it was not the most current comment that had been made on the post. It was, I suspect, the last comment fed to me before I unfollowed. What I think was happening was, every time a new post was made, that final ‘legit’ comment (that came while I was still subscribed) was getting bumped up to the top of my feed.

The final time it appeared, my feed showed that comment with a date of Dec 17 following notifications of id suggestions that were made on Dec 19.

They finally stopped. Either the bug worked itself out or maybe people just stopped commenting. :-)

Edit to add in case it helps. I know that comment I referred to above got bumped to the top of my feed at least three times, possibly more. But it seems (checking now) that each time it bumped to the top, its previous presence in my feed disappeared. So it was more ‘cut and paste’ rather than ‘copy and paste’. And, I can’t find it at all before Dec 19 so any original Dec 17 notification I might have gotten is not currently in my feed amongst others I got on Dec 17.

edit to add:

Yes, the posts only show up on the dashboard and not in the notifications icon.

If I am understanding the terminology correctly, this was my case also I believe (memory serving me). It showed up in the readable list of notifications but it did not show up as a notification in the red comment icon at the top right (desktop computer accessing website)

2nd edit to add:
I just did some more digging. I don’t see where I can determine the exact last time this comment appeared at the top of my notifications feed. Remembering that it was dated Dec 17, it can currently be found after a notification for an ID suggestion on Dec 19 and before a notification for a project blog post (unrelated to this issue) made on Dec 20, 2024 at 09:10 (my time -06:00). It looks like the most recent comment on the KARMA blog post (which is the buggy one) was made on Dec 20, 20204 at 02:22 (again, my time). So, if we wanted to test this bug, someone could make a comment on the KARMA post (link above) and I could see if it bumps that repeating comment in my feed.
