This species isn’t exactly well represented beyond the western parts of the state. But just out of pure curiosity, I would love to know if this species resides anywhere in the eastern part of Michigan. Thanks to a small number of iNat observations we can see there is a population in western Michigan, and a much smaller, isolated population (the only known population) in Ontario, Canada. It would be interesting to see if we can find a “bridge” between these two populations, you know, just for curiosity’s sake.
The cicada is very easy to ID, it’s quite large, the largest you will find in the state. Often covered in a white powdery substance but that’s not always the case. The mesonotum (thorax) will have black patches on the periphery with no additional markings within said patches – Note the red circle in the image below.
Audio recordings may be easier to obtain, it’s loud and sounds sickly, usually calling in the evening. Affiliated with oak trees.
