**Platform** : Mac OS

**Browser** , if a website issue: Vivaldi macOS Version 26.6.2 (Build 25G83)

**URLs (aka web addresses) of any relevant observations or pages**:

**Screenshots of what you are seeing** :

 ![Screenshot 2026-10-17 at 7.03.44 PM](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex016/uploads/inaturalist/original/3X/e/a/ea612f14b8572ec098392e31ca5cfd8fc67915e6.jpeg)

**Description of problem** :

Step 1: Upload an observation

Step 2: Start typing in the species name: butterfl

Step 3: The interface suggests “Butterflies and Moths (Butterflee)”

While “butterflee” is a marvelous word, it’s not used in American English: it appears to be Scots. Why is it being suggested, when the English common name (Butterflies and Moths) already matches what I typed? FWIW, I’m registered with US iNat, and the observation was in Virginia.

i could be wrong but in my experience that menu is sort of agnostic to your locale and language settings and just picks an arbitrary (maybe first alphabetically?? maybe according to the order it was added?? i can never find rhyme or reason to it…) name which matches what you type. so im not sure if this is really a bug per se, the system is suggesting a name for a taxon that matches what you wrote, just not the one you would expect

But should it not then show up the entire Scots for Butterflies **and** Moths, as opposed to only the Scots for Butterflies? Not that I would know Scots but still: [https://sco.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butterflee](https://sco.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butterflee) gives me: "…_butterflee or butterie is maistlins a day-fleein insect o the order Lepidoptera that includes the **butterflees an [mochs](https://sco.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moch "Moch").**"_

Have you chosen your (may have 3) languages ?
Mine are English and Afrikaans (since the common names are often helpful to get to the ID)

> Order Lepidoptera Butterflies and Moths · Vlinders En Motte

But still strange that Scots comes up, if you have **not** deliberately chosen that language

In your profile Settings

Mine defaults to show scientific name first

PS the quickest way to get to Lepidoptera is a single ell … that autocompletes to Lepidoptera. Then you avoid the butterflee :~)

Repeating myself, I see on the 2023 thread [https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/lepidoptera-labled-as-butterflee-in-drop-down-menu/47600/2](https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/lepidoptera-labled-as-butterflee-in-drop-down-menu/47600/2)

I don’t know the matching rules that iNat uses, but it may just be that it returns the top comment in alphabetical order (and butterflee comes before butterfly).

It shows “butterflee” for Lepidoptera because that is all that is entered for Scots. I updated to “Butterflees an Mochs” just now as this seems more accurate. I suppose that might affect the displayed names issue depending on the matching rules.
