Website to explore iNaturalist data - feedback wanted

@DianaStuder if you want to add more filters to identify without manually editing URLs, you can try using my site. I built a site to add features that are available in the iNat API, but aren’t easily accessible on the iNat Explore page. My site allows searching and excluding multiple taxa, users, projects, and places. And there are over 50 available fields in filters. The search queries on my site can also be used on the iNat Explore, Identify, and Export page.

  1. select what type of item you want search by selecting “Search for”. The default option is “Observed Species”.

  2. Enter in the search term, and select item you want from the menu.

  1. The selected item is displayed in the side menu along with the number of observations for that item. You can deleted the selected item by clicking on the ‘X’.

  1. Users can search for multiple items by selecting “Search For” and typing in a new search term. In this example, I searched for monarchs and narrowleaf milkweed in Los Angeles and San Diego.

  1. Click “Filters” to choose the filters. I grouped the filters by topic and tabs in an attempt to organize the all the available options. When people select one of the filter fields, the counts at the top of the popup change so people can see how the filters affect the number of observations. Currently selected filters are shown in a green oval at the top of the popup. You can delete a filter by clicking on the “X”.

  1. The default view is the map. You can click ‘Grid’ to see the observations, and ‘Media’ to see all the photos and sounds for the observations.

  1. Once you have a query you like, you can use the query on the iNaturalist site. Click the ‘iNaturalist links’ icon. Then click on the ‘Explore page’, ‘Identify page’, or ‘Export page’ to go to the iNaturalist page. Only caveat is that there are a small number of queries that work on the iNat API but not on the iNat pages.

If you have any questions or suggestions, let me know.
