Lifer Bogertophis Subocularis, AOR cruised at 10:22 PM, temperature 82F,
Brewster County Texas, LETS GOOOOO!!!
Adorable, one of only five land mammals endemic to Canada, adorable, critically endangered though recovering quite strongly thanks to conservation efforts (from ~30 wild individuals in 2003 to 381 in 2024), adorable, and most of all adorable!
Wow!!! SOOO adorable!!! And yay for successful conservation efforts!
First time I learned of this critter. And it is even better to see conservation efforts in action!
Average naturalist interaction with an octopus
Very nice one! Wish mine was as bright.
Correct!
But not when they’re mating, as these were. Which apparently they can spend a whole day doing…

Gray Spruce Looper Moth
Good thing I kept my eye on when it landed.

Acorn Moth
Both of these were this morning’s lifers… I haven’t looked at the whole last week for lifers, it seems there are some every day.
Why don’t you just eat them?
Yesterday i finally got No. 1 of my wishlist - so maybe my favourite lifer of the year:

At the time, we weren’t sure if we were allowed to, but after looking at the regulations it seems we could have kept that one.
A spider wasp! Priocnemis minorata (not confirmed)
As I was rounding the bend of one of my favorite trails, there it was, hauling a very limp victim along the side of a large boulder
I think I spooked it when I went in for the shoot because it dropped the spider in a little indent and scooted up the stone for about a minute, then came back to finish the job.
The other day was world snake day, and I stumbled on a beautiful coachwhip in my yard! They tend to be pretty common throughout most of their range, but in my county they’re probably the single rarest snake out there (excluding extirpated species). Plus this one was almost 8 feet long!

This black caterpillar hunter (I think–it’s not RG yet) was moving VERY fast this morning when I happened upon him on my morning walk. I am shocked that I got this good of a picture. There are only a small handful of obs in my county which surprised me for such a large and striking beetle that was casually scurrying across the street.
