What is your Favorite Lifer from this week?

Spiraea is in bloom (so far identified only by CV).

Spring peepers. I heard them last year, but didn’t have the sound recorder yet.

I finally photographed a Black Kite!

Nothing special but this was the first time I’ve ever taken a picture of a blue jay

Nice photo … and Blue jays are always special, no matter how many times you get a picture!

spotted salamander!!! this guy was a really good size too

Given the way that Blue Jays seem to be more aware of the camera (and their ability to mess with a photographer) than most birds, I’d say that this is pretty darned special!

Don’t really know specifically what this is yet. But its the first freshwater planarian that I have shot.

Next one I see, I will probably switch down from the 2x lens to the 2.5-5x one. Was pretty hard to really get it in focus.

Finally saw a Yellow Honeyeater which has been on my list for a long time. It literally jumped around and yelled at me.

Maybe it wasn’t yelling. Maybe it was joyfully exclaiming “Look at me! Here I am! Aren’t I even more beautiful than you imagined?”

This long nosed armadillo was very fun to see! I used to see them all the time but it’s been about a year since I’ve seen one. Definitely gonna post again soon, since I’m going down to the coast to see some spoonbills!

Well it was that, as are all lifers:)

My first violet. At least CV thinks it’s a violet, and the lines on the petals look like those of a violet.

I found a silverfish in the sink.

I found an unknown seaweed in a pack of wakame, don’t know what it is.

What appears to be a geometer moth appeared outside the window, but as I previously observed a caterpillar, I can’t count it as a lifer until both have been identified further.

This was last week, but what was funny is that we both referred to it as “Picasso fish” while waiting to put a real name on it. Turned out its common name is quite logical.

My favorite is the brown thrasher I heard less than a day ago, when leaving for church. It’s also called “sinsonte castaño” (brown mockingbird) which sounds right. I didn’t even know the genus exists. According to Wikipedia, these birds have over a thousand song phrases, which is more than sentzunti and even more than umtzunti.

After church, I found a deadnettle near the pear tree. I’ve observed several Lamiaceae before, but they’ve all been identified as different genera.

Going out to buy some chicken, I found a dead mouse in the parking lot, and going to the courthouse to get an old deed, I parked next to a wood sorrel.

I was really lucky to spot this Yellow Crowned night heron on one of my walks! Not exactly a new lifer, as I saw a couple three years ago, but I’m counting it as I only started tracking species in January.

I have five lifers, four of which (along with the thrasher and deadnettle) are from the birthday celebration. I also have some yet unidentified birds and mammal.

«Mignonne, allons voir si la rose…» mais elle n’a pas encore déclose.

I’m pretty sure the tree is planted, as it’s in an island in the parking lot of the Toyota shop where I took my car for maintenance, but the lichen is not.
On the way to the store where I saw the rosebush, I saw an opossum but didn’t stop. The next day, on the way to Toyota, I stopped and found what seem to be at least two species of blowflies on the carcass. Nearby is a redbud which was being pollinated by carpenter bees.
At a surveying job, I found a crape myrtle probably on the neighbor’s land.

My favorite lifer has to be this adorable gnatcatcher! I’ve heard them but never seen one until this morning.
