How cool is this little glass box? I think it is glass. I have no idea where one my buy one. This popped up in my Facebook feed.
cell phone. macro and telescope lens. car keys.
a dog, usually.
I had an epiphany today. Most of my observation were done with me starting with a landmower, hoe, pair of shears or at least with working gloves.
and ends up with me running to get a cellphone and the garden work unfinished.
It’s called a photo tank. Angler’s Emporium has 3 different models. Some of them come with a ruler integrated along from bottom edge.

Sounds like a good afternoon in the garden!
Very cool! Thanks!
It is usually fun
The downside is that i tend to leave weeds, and we are not talking about small dandelions, more like huge parsnips, because they are full of bugs and I tend to observe more than pulling it.
The flashlight is a UV light, a portable handheld field microscope with a phone clip, foldable measuring ruler, tape measure, clear ruler with a new protractor, binoculars, and phone macro lens
almost all essential tools are listed in thread by now I think.
so here is new thing. its an open-source android app helpful for iNat users: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kylecorry.trail_sense
it uses phone sensors and few of the things I love in the app are: GPS, ruler, compass, altimeter, odometer, clinometer, whistle, photo maps, backtracking, metal detector, weather, sunrise-set timings, meteor showers, eclipses, tide timings, lists/notes, formats converter, qr scanner (geocaching)
yeah swiss army knife of phone tool app for travelling light ig lol.
Outdoor Active. It used to be called something else and was good enough to pay for the subscription for, but then they changed it, social media-ised and shitified it and I wouldn’t subscribe now. Yet it still remains better than many outside the US and UK and I continue using it. It’s free to use and you can download the map tiles ahead of time when you won’t have phone signal.
I’ve been using eyebrow tweezers to take out prickly pear type hairs, they work quite well and are perhaps more easily available!
One litre is 10cm x 10cm x 10cm, a cubic metre (m3) is 1m x 1m x 1m. So one cubic metre = 1000 litres! So you could carry your gear, and your friend and their gear in your bag ; P
This is an old post, but the tread showed up and I just started reading. If you’re still looking, or if anyone else is, try a machinest ruler. You could always just drill a small hole in it.
And if you don’t have a drill, heat a nail and use it to melt a hole in the ruler. It’s also less likely to crack the rule.
I take snake hooks, bite proof gloves, tanago pole, field guides, fishing gear and approximately 30 bottles of water. I also usually take a .22 pistol or pocket knife for self defense.
That’s a big part of why I carry a Swiss Army Knife, because it has a small pair of tweezers!
Is it safe to assume that you are generally getting to the field using some form of personal vehicular transportation?
As someone who relies on my two feet and public transportation, I am trying to imagine carrying this much equipment with me when going out inatting.
Usually yes. I pack a bit lighter when I’m on foot, but still take a good 4 bottles of water. Heat exhaustion absolutely sucks
The machinest rulers I linked are steel, but that should work on plastic ones.
