Step 1: Using Chrome (IOS and Windows) the Wikipedia page appears not to exist, but it is does exist: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ailanthus_altissima and is also visible using the IOS App.
There seems to have been something that happened to Wikipedia page connections lately. Curators can manually refresh things to fix it, but it would be helpful if staff could take a look.
I have the same problem here: https://www.inaturalist.org/places/nabu-weidelandschaft-schmidtenhoehe with Firefox (the redirect exists). I didnt test it on mobile.
Are you logged into iNaturalist when the Wikipedia information is not shown?
When I’m logged in, I see the Wikipedia data.
When I’m not logged in, I don’t see the Wikipedia data.
This happens on Safari, Chrome, and Firefox on MacOS.
Is this a Cloudflare issue? I looked at the network tab in dev console and saw a request to taxa description page. https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/57278/description?wiki_prompt=true. When I visit that page when not logged in, I get a Cloudflare verification message, and I see Source: iNaturalist. When I visit that page when logged in, no Cloudflare verification message, and I see Source: Wikipedia.
Odd. I’m also on Chrome, on several computers, and not having any issue with it.
Do you have ad blockers and such running? I’ve found that some add and tracking blockers interfere with Wikipedia. I had to disable one of mine because it was preventing Wikipedia from showing images.
I was logged in - and other species I checked looked fine. And I guess a curator has refreshed the Ailanthus altissima page because now the Wikipedia link appears correctly.
It seems like there are two different issues here: (1) whether Wikipedia content is displayed at all (maybe related to whether the user is logged in or not?), and (2) if it is, whether the displayed content is up-to-date with the latest content on Wikipedia itself. I think the latter is what @aaronliston describes in the OP.
Here is another example of the iNaturalist page not “refreshing” the content automatically: the wikipedia page was significantly expanded ~2 weeks ago, but iNaturalist’s page still displays the older stub content.
I edited the topic title to reflect the issue I’ve been seeing on other pages too - you can view the edit history of the first post. By “refresh to display”, I meant curators have to refresh the link for the article to display at all, not just to display updated text/content.
here’s some old discussion about how iNat caches Wikipedia content, which may be relevant: https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/adding-wikipedia-links-when-an-article-is-created-about-a-taxon/9084/12. if it doesn’t look like Wiki content isn’t refreshing timely, maybe they’ve changed the way they’re handling the caching?
