Wildspecies.ca summary for curators

Curators
1

The Canadian government has been compiling a list of every wild species ever recorded in Canada. They have put out a report every 5 years: 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020. The first report only dealt with vertebrates. The latest deals with plants, arthropods, fungi, and more. The list of species is available separately as a spreadsheet and is sometimes updated between reports. The Oct. 2024 spreadsheet lists 23,384 species.

In the spreadsheet are columns for two vernacular names for each species, one in English, one in French. At some point, it was decided that in every case where no vernacular name was known to them, vernacular names in English and French should be created. This might have made sense in the early years, when they were only dealing with vertebrates, dragonflies, butterflies, and other prominent organisms, most of which already had vernacular names. In later years, it involved creating literally thousands of names for obscure species.

The spreadsheet does not record which vernacular names were constructed by them and which were existing names from other sources.

At some point (2015? 2019?) NatureServe copied the names from the spreadsheet into the NatureServe Explorer database. They either do not record the sources of vernacular names in their database, or don’t expose that information in their public interface.

Various other websites have copied the vernacular names from NatureServe wholesale. Some are government websites, e.g. https://fieldguide.mt.gov/, others are run by individuals, e.g. https://www.minnesotaseasons.com/

Some of these names (not even close to all) have been added to iNaturalist. In turn, dozens of flags have been created requesting deletion of these names.

Frequently seen arguments for and against are summarized here. I’ve attempted to present them neutrally, to the best of my ability. Many arguments only apply to individual names.

Pro-retain arguments:

  • The name is in use, as shown by the websites.
  • The species has no other (English/French) name.
  • The species has another (English/French) name which is the default English/French name.
  • The name is a reasonable description of the species.

Pro-delete arguments:

  • The name is made-up.
  • The name is not used by humans to communicate with one another.
  • Searching for the English/French name returns less and worse information about the species than searching for the scientific name.
  • The species already has a common name.
  • The name is the common name of a different species.
  • The name is a word-for-word translation of the scientific name.
  • The name is an incorrect translation of the scientific name.
  • The name mirrors taxonomy, with different parts of the name corresponding to species, genus, and family or sub-family.
  • The name is not stable over time - the name is changed frequently to match taxonomic changes.
  • The genus or family part of the name describes a characteristic only possessed by a different species or genus, respectively.
  • The specific part of the name describes a characteristic which is not possessed by the species.
  • The specific part of the name is generic, or describes a characteristic which is shared by (many) other species.
  • The specific part of the name describes a characteristic which is not prominent, or is not visible in photographs.

In summarizing these arguments, many important details have been left out. Some of the arguments are accepted fact, e.g. that the names were created, recently, while others are hotly debated. Many arguments made are vague and conflate several reasons, e.g. “This name is misleading and causes confusion.” (Why, specifically?) Some questions have simple, easy to understand, wrong answers. E.g. a web search which returns a page of results isn’t necessarily evidence that a name should be retained, if the results aren’t compared with those returned by searching for other names, including the scientific name, and the contents of the individual sites aren’t compared.

The number of times these arguments have come up, individually and collectively, is an important fact in itself. Quality control on the created names was relatively low in later years, compared to earlier years, and very low compared to the amount of effort the AOS puts into standard English names for birds.

Abstractly, vernacular names are good. Practically, iNaturalist curators delete vernacular names that cause difficulties for users of the iNaturalist website, whether by directly causing misidentifications, indirectly causing users to fail to find information about a species they’ve observed and someone else has correctly identified, or causing any other undesirable outcome.

Some other forum threads which discuss wildspecies.ca:

Flags asking that names from wildspecies.ca be removed:

  • Larinia borealis, Apr 2020: https://www.inaturalist.org/flags/487415 (First time I’m aware of that wildspecies.ca was identified as the source of a name. There are probably earlier flags I’m not aware of.)
  • Jumping Spiders, Sep 2024: https://www.inaturalist.org/flags/699450 (There are enough curators specifically interested in jumping spiders that they were able to get together and figure out which names from wildspecies.ca were created and which weren’t.)

I’d like to list more flags which asked for names to be deleted and generated substantial discussion, but I don’t know how to find any except the ones I started myself.

Replies should contain information directly related to the curation of names originating from wildspecies, so curators won’t have to sift through a lot of irrelevant replies to find useful information. Discussion about collecting and editing the information is also fine. Comments about the general situation (and feelings about it), about particular names, or other topics should go in other threads.

Here’s a list of spider names in the wildspecies list which have been added to iNaturalist at one time or another. As stated above, these names are a mixture of pre-existing names and ones creates by wildspecies.

Ones with “(pre-2003)” in the notes appeared in the American Arachnological Society’s “Common Names of Arachnids 2003, Fifth Edition”. Don’t delete them, nor the ones added to iNaturalist before 2015.

You’ll notice a handful of people added a lot of names. Don’t get mad at them. It was wildspecies and NatureServe which mixed together constructed and natural names without labelling which was which.

Ignore the colours. I don’t know how to stop that.
