Hello! Avid iNaturalist Classic app user here, with staff continuing development and marketing for the iNaturalist Next app, and updates entirely halting for Classic’s app, I was wondering if there’s an eventual timeline or planned development to remove Classic as an option for people to use?
I would love to see it stay around permanently but I believe it’s already inaccessible from a few devices’ app stores, just curious and worried if support will stop for it entirely and if the app will cease to be.
In case Classic is to be phased out and not supported, I’d note that it’s ok to have both on your smartphone. I did that and transitioned gradually from one to the other. The new version really is much more powerful once you learn your way around it. I hardly ever use Classic now.
(whispering because I am fairly certain this will cement my status as the village idiot)
I was away from active forum use for some time so likely missed key info, but how do I know which iNaturalist I am using, if it is classic or next because I only see iNaturalist, installed, and Seek by iNaturalist in the GooglePlay store.
Or is next solely for iphone people and so does not appear in Gogleplay stores? If so when you say the plan is for the classic apps to be no more, why is that pluralized, what does this mean for those of us who do not use iphones?
Sorry, just trying to anticipate if one day I will need to access iNaturalist solely on my laptop.
Right - the new version isn’t released for Android in the Google Play store yet.
At some point, the new app will be released for Android, at which point I assume, if they follow the model of iOS release, they’ll rename the current Android app iNaturalist Classic as well.
Ou focus is on improving iNaturalistNext in terms of performance experience and parity. Once we achieve that we will turn our attention to next steps on iNatClassic. Stay tuned for ample coms between now and then as we report our status, what we’ve learned, and next steps of our plan.
