I think it’s also there needing to be an understanding of what qualifies as natural, and how it can be a lot easier than people realize. Instead of a cultivated tree, a student can net several observations of the lichen growing on the bark. Fungi counts. Bugs count. Droppings count. Rolybugs count.

Once a student gets over that preconceived hump of what qualifies as data, it gets a lot easier.

Yes! I’ve been managing a campus BioBlitz for the last few weeks and when I noticed that several participants were very enthusiastically posting observations of the pretty flowers in our campus landscaping, I made a journal post that included the suggestion that people try to get insects, etc. on the plants instead. We didn’t wind up with a ton of those, but there was a notable decrease in the magnolias, tulips, etc.
