Annotations - happy to help

3.0 Overview of projects requested, for annotation volunteers:

RG United States Lepidoptera - life stage annotations

RG Northern Cardinal w/o sex annotation - sex and life stage annotations (juveniles have dark beaks, adult males are mostly red.)

Lycosidae - adult females with egg sacs/spiderlings - annotate egg sacs as Life Stage Eggs. Useful observation fields: Spider Life: Spiderlings, Multiple Life Stages: Juvenile, Spider Brood Carrying

Platypezidae- sex annotation (male eyes meet in the middle, females don’t)

Odonata - especially seeking nymphs

Syrphinae - sex annotations for hoverflies

Trochodes ornatus - determine the colour (red, yellow, other) in observation field Ornate Beetle color

will keep this one in mind

so do i ping you in my observations or do i put my observations in this post?

You need a theme, similar to the listed examples in the previous comment. I am researching … and I need to know how many are yellow, how many are red, and why - or whatever.

Annotation adjustments in other areas of the biodiversity profile may also enhance ID suggestions. For example, the ā€œLife Stageā€ and ā€œSizeā€ of a mollusc species observation may be more ID relevant than the ā€œSexā€ of the species.

Suggestions for changes to annotations should go in this thread: https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/lets-talk-annotations/627/ (I do not know if there is currently any development work being done on annotations, but it nonetheless makes sense for all discussion to be collected in a single thread).

Annotations are mostly about information related to life stage and phenology; ā€œsizeā€ is not inherently connected to this and it is also not clear to me how a numerical value could be integrated into the annotation system, which is based on a fixed set of options. An observation field might be more useful for this purpose.

I would greatly appreaciate help with life stage annotations here:
ID-Modul Ā· iNaturalist

I can ID the adults worldwide but the larvae are usually not very nice to look at - and I can’t ID them. Plus, there are so many of them inbetween the adults…
So, in case you are already done with all the other requests, feel free to tackle this with me. 3300 left. :)

May observations done :)

I noticed someone being at it. You were so fast with that!

Awesome job. Many thanks! Now, I can focus on the IDs! :) The june chart did’t update yet (I think?) but it shows 0 left to annotate for me:

You’re welcome! A nice straightforward one. With shortcuts, I can breeze through  Hope it helped!

I am currently working through these and I am finding this super pleasing. Probably one of the most fun annotation projects I have been working on.
I knew I liked annotation fields but not to that extent lol.
Wish there were more requests like this one :)
Very cool idea!

Btw: I am someone who passionatly IDs patterns and I am noticing quite a few things with these beetles. If you dont mind and have some info, feel free to DM me about the variations @llotta (2x L) on iNat!

Is there a project for this or something like that? I would love to follow up on the outcome.

I am not done yet, but I took a first look at the distribution (red vs yellow):

This is a cool project from alisonhunter901 :)

Alisons beetles are sorted:

The 142 reviewed observations are those not allowing annotation fields.
Fingers crossed for more exciting ideas such as this! :)

The Trichodes ornatus / ornate checkered beetle project is complete! Thanks to any and all who helped.

There are some observations that are blocked on annotations, but I have faved all the red ones, so hope to be able to fill in those gaps after the download.

Here is the spreadsheet with the blocked ones filled in:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dFKqfAhouCHk3bfwwVC5WNADzsw2S6GOrnOAouJ4puc/edit?usp=sharing

The maps generated in iNat of course don’t have the blocked ones but they can be mapped in QGIS. I may post that some day, but I have to work on other stuff for now.

Thanks for sharing! I had lots of fun looking through the observations. A beautiful bug. :)

Alison’s project inspired me to start an idea of my own. In Ctenophora ornata (craneflies) I see three different thorax color variations: red (light red to mostly red with small black spots or sides), fully black, and mixed (front part black, rear part of the thorax red).

Since an observation field for thorax colour already exists, I started applying it directly to C. ornata using the values: red, black, mixed.

If you’d like to help but aren’t sure whether the thorax is mainly red or black, or if the image quality is too poor, please just skip those observations. Examples of red, black, and what I consider ā€œmixedā€ are shown below. There aren’t that many observations, but at the moment I can’t spend as much time on the PC as I’d like :slightly_smiling_face:

Hello! I have a question. On the graph, if the colours are pastel, does that mean that’s the number without annotations? And the darker sections are the annnotations done? Because if I search for Spain, it says there are no matching observations i.e. every single hoverfly in Spain has been annotated already!
