Announcing the Universal Metadata Tool Beta (by @megachile)

Yeah that’s also what I ended up doing

I’ve never been able to get it to work on Firefox, either. I’ve switched to Chrome for iNaturalist.

Has been working for me on Firefox

You have to go to about:debugging…this Firefox…temporary extension
https://firefox-source-docs.mozilla.org/devtools-user/about_colon_debugging/index.html

Unfortunately means you’ll have the re add it every time you fully close the browser

I have the same experience.

I’ve never gotten it to work even temporarily, but in any case, having to add an extension every time I open my web browser is, at the very least, not an improvement on just using a different web browser.

I am trying to use bulk action with larva button I created, but somehow the action is not showing up at all in bulk mode :(

The button is saved - i can use its shortcut.

Lol I seem to have installed twice accidentally and my config saved in older extension actions is getting masked out by newer install and its blank config.

This tool is brilliant: well done, @Megachile, for making it available!

Two quick questions:

  • Would it be possible to update the first post with the current download link? Because it didn’t work for me, unlike the one in a more recent post (I can’t remember which one, sorry)

  • Is it already possible (and if not, would it be possible to add the feature) to add an action to add an observation field, but without a pre-filled value, and allow the value to be entered when using the tool? In my case, this would be to add the ‘OpenStreetMap (OSM)’ field to a selection of observations, and only enter the OSM URL once the observations have been entered (the URLs change with every new search for an OSM object).

I’m switching from Chrome to firefox and found that in order to follow your install directions, I have to have the Developer Edition, Nightly, or ESR versions of Firefox installed. In default Firefox, it does not allow you to actually set “xpinstall.signatures.required” as “false”. Once I downloaded the (free!) ESR version, I had no problems installing the tool in Firefox by following your instructions.

Thanks as always for your lifesaving gift! I’m teaching my students how to use it too

Yes, this is already possible. When you are adding an action to a button, for relevant action types there is a checkbox that says “Prompt for value at runtime (use Field Value above as default)” which gives you that exact box.

I’m in the process of submitting the extension through the official stores now; I would love to have someone explicitly test the release builds once they’re up to make sure there are no regressions or anything browser specific I’m not seeing, before I make a full new forum post announcing those links. I’ll let you know when they’re ready but in the meantime let me know if this is something you’d be willing to do. Ideally would have people for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox at least.

Ok, I am waiting another week or so to hear about any major failures to fix before I make the official launch post, but the extensions are up in the Firefox and Chrome (which also works for Edge and many other browsers) web stores.

Chrome/Edge/etc

For those of you who have had issues installing the extension before: please try this and let me know if it is easier.

Remember to export your configurations before changing the installation!
