Olive-sided Flycatcher I guess
Not quite a nemesis, but White-Eyed Vireos. The vireos always hop around in the treetops, just out of the range where they’d be able to be visually distinguished, singing away. It’s frustrating, but exceptionally entertaining as well. Doesn’t help that I’ve only got a phone that’s a few years old for my observations, so ‘out of range’ isn’t really all that far!
Yeah, I pretty much only use my phone for observations, so I don’t have many bird observations, let alone ones of hyperactive birds like vireos. Welcome to the forum!
Dicyrtomina ornata… I would do anything to see one! If I had to choose a vertebrate, maybe a Carolina chickadee? Technically, I’ve seen these before, but I’m yet to get a decent photo of one! (they are so skittish)
I just got my flycatcher yesterday!
Congrats!
Now, probably Blue-winged Warbler. In my opinion, the best looking warbler in Southern Ontario! I though I had finally found one 2 days ago in Point Pelee National Park, just to find out it was a hybrid!!! Ughh…
Well at least you got half a BWWA!
Haha yes! And also half a GWWA
It kinda sounds wrong tho… half a warbler?
Well, updating my nemesis list. Scissor-tailed flycatchers seem to have a vendetta against me. Saw one a few weeks ago when I was leaving my neighborhood, only got a bad image on my dashcam. Saw one yesterday fly into a tree, I couldn’t find it. Got in my car for the first time in a week today, within 40 seconds or so of me turning on the car, scissor-tailed flycatcher flies over my car and into the trees. Dashcam image looks outright fake this time.
Mine would have to be the Common Gallinule. Despite birding in prime habitat on countless occasions, this bird has avoided me to an annoying extent. It’s like they just don’t want me to see them.
I have been told that Death Adders exist but so far I think everyone is lying to me
Another that I have seen only a handful of times (four I think?) despite how incredibly common it apparently is would be the Cotton Harlequin Bug
Ahh, I love iNat. Where else can you find people who really want to find something called a death adder? That is just about the scariest-named snake I can think of.
Or a really dangerous mathematics competition
Wait, those are common? I was lucky enough to have one leave woodpecker holes all over a tree in my front yard so I could get an observation from that, but I’ve never actually seen the bird…
I’m also awful at fishing so I don’t have observations of even the most common species.
I’ve always assumed they were common. Not like backyard bird common, but findable without too much effort. They’ve probably been declining due to habitat loss recently, making them harder to find.
Following up on this, there have been a LOT of Blue-winged Warblers in my area recently, and I tried multiple spots, didn’t get a warbler, but I did get a tick!
Was the tick a lifer?
Haha sadly not… in 2 ways
Dang.
