Are observations of caged animals an example of someone’s interest towards nature?

Except that - for many people, living in cities, working not as field biologists - all those things you dismiss as invalid, ARE the nature that they can see and engage with. It is a first step to realising, but wait, there is more … Absolutely vital to a future in which people are willing to conserve and study your chosen reptiles.

This. We all have to start somewhere, and for me as a kid – obviously unable to go on my own out to nature places – zoos and aquaria, collecting house plants, and trying different kinds of pets, as well as books, were where I could begin. And as I grew and achieved more independence, I became dissatisfied with these, but they were nonetheless my starting point.
