Here’s a useful tip for anyone who wants to make it easy for themselves to contribute more IDs to iNaturalist, based on discussion in this feature request:
- Make a list of species (or taxa) you can confidently identify
- Find the numerical ID of the list (this number in the URL)
- Add the number to the end of this URL: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?list_id=
That URL is now a customised version of the Identify page which only shows taxa on your list. Bookmark it, and you have an instant list of easily-identifiable low-hanging fruit you can check once a day. You can further customise the filtering (e.g. limiting results only to a particular location) and then bookmark that URL if you want to be pickier about what you see.
I used to subscribe to some taxa which I wanted to get better at IDing, but that quickly became clunky and unmanageable. I find this approach much more flexible. Note that the feature request linked above suggests using your life list for this. While it has the advantage of getting automatically updated, in my experience it includes many observations which I have no chance of identifying, so personally I prefer manually making a list of taxa I know I can confidently identify.
