But some of my pics taken in Botswana are the first pics of living organisms so may have value for scientific literature even if not for coffee mugs ! Now the scientists wanting to publish ‘only’ pics of some organisms have to pay high fees to Alamy since they now hold the licence and copyright.

Should iNaturalist warn users when making choices of which copyright to use, that Alamy is likely to scam them and alter the licence ?

iNat’s default license is CC BY-NC. if you choose something else, it’s sort of up to you to understand your choice and live with the consequences. the CC licenses are well-documented by Creative Commons, and there’s plenty of third-party explanation of the licenses available online, too.

I’m not sure how Alamy works, but their Wikipedia article describes exactly this kind of practice (claiming copyrights on public domain images and trying to extort license fees). It seems what they’re doing is at least fraudulent if not illegal and I think the criticism of this practice is quite war…

Thank you. I have now changed all my licences to CC-BY-NC but it is a pity Wikipedia wont be using them.

[image] pisum: is that wrong if someone is willing to pay the price? What is wrong IMO is to pretend to sell something that doesn’t actually exist, Alamy has no rights to the image, so you do not gain any rights you didn’t already have when you “buy” the rights to the image from Alamy.

Thank you for this. I think I even recall a sort of ominous tone about changing it (I definitely remember s-l-o-w-i-n-g down and reading carefully) but it’s been some years since I signed up so cannot be sure. Anyone?
