I would suggest giving it another try. It looks like you have six figure IDs (which is great!), and making that many without using Identify is quite an accomplishment. I think almost all high volume IDers use Identify to some extent.
You can definitely
in Identify and handle most observations in the modal. If some observation requires specific functions that aren’t there (maybe <2% in my experience), there’s a link to open each observation in a new tab, so it’s no more work to do that than opening each observation via any other page.
Me too proteas in Western Cape Normally I clear that every day, but they will accumulate for me, till the CNC IDs are cleared. You can do a page of IDs, then go thru again if you usually annotate - flowers, fruit, buds, none. A small learning curve, and with a text expander for frequently used texts.
That’s a great idea, and something that we will talk to iNaturalist about for next year. By the third day of the CNC, I do send out an email to our project organizers whose projects have 0 or very few observations encouraging them that there’s still time to start making observations.
I drew a small rectangular in the water above Madagascar, and set the observations to needs_id on the Explore page. Then I copied the coordinates to identify page. Both the explore page and identify page have 144 observations.
just to clarify, there is no need to do this. Once you draw the bounding box in Explore, click the Filters box and then click ‘Identify’ at bottom right, and the spatial filter will be carried across
There are projects for all the CNC cities/areas, so you could add one of those to the identification filters. (Or just use the umbrella project: City Nature Challenge 2026).
oy vey! I had Unknowns in the whole Middle East down to half a page and now it’s 21 pages. well, at least a love of nature bodes well for peace and hope in the Middle East… lol…
Thanks. I’m not looking to add observations to the CNC. Its just that last night I put casual on about 100 observations of birch trees planted along the roadsides of a housing estate in Ireland, sometimes multiple obs of the same tree. I wondered if the observer was hoping to boost his city’s nature challenge but I couldn’t see anything that indicated CNC.
I’m glad I don’t have to participate in this year’s CNC. Last year Málaga was taking part, so I had too, but I found it really stressing to take photos of everything. I’m going out every day anyway for my streak, but I like to take various photos of one organisms, then process my photos, crop, sharpen and maybe adjust light. Once everything is uploaded I go through them, annotate, add observation fields or to projects. All of that I didn’t do last year. Not to speak of the organiser who didn’t do a single ID. Fortunately there were not many participants.
I’m also from southern Ontario and have always been frustrated by this as well. I was leading a birding hike on Saturday and it was 5*C and windy and raining for most of it haha…
Similarly eBird does its “Global Big Day” on World Migratory Bird Day which is the second Saturday of May. Peak migration in southern Ontario is generally around 3 weeks into May so this ends up being up to half a month too early in some years.
Today promises to be another scorcher. (We are in a 23 day heat wave that began 23 April.)
I was out Friday early and then again briefly later that afternoon but since then have decided my time is better spent making identifications for heartier, younger Observers, there being plenty at Needs ID in the local reto I recognize to species. In this way, perhaps I can encourage some fresh, local eyes and make a little difference.
(I suspect there is not any one date that would suit everywhere.)
