City Nature Challenge - issues & suggestions for improvement

Less ‘attack’ than

  • newbies who are learning to iNat
  • ditto who misunderstand the ‘competitive’ side of CNC. A marathon not a sprint.

It’s pretty clear that if an iNatter is really into the competitive aspect of the CNC, cheating will work for them and there will be few or no repercussions unless they’re very dumb about how they do it.

I don’t see many parallels either, tbh. Cyberattacks are malicious or have a clear purpose behind them, such as profit or information.

Our CNC woes are pretty much exclusively misinformed users.

You could draw a parallel with denial-of-service, though, as a few of us were totally out of action for any other iNat activities while this has been going on.

and still - CNC obs are around 40% RG.
So almost 2/3 wait at Needs ID … unless you are in Graz where only the last (difficult) third waits. The ‘winner’ still stuck firmly at 4% RG - not much IDing happening there.

…or, really, not learning, since many seem to appear for CNC and never come back. And with the numbers of observations involved relative to the number of identifiers, plus the often poor photos, the necessarily delayed responses hardly encourage them to hang around anyway.

The duress users who are clearly here for a day, and gone, are no loss.
But I use the ‘profile added in the last week’ filter for Afirca - and there are some who are interested. Eager and willing to learn to iNat.

(And the not at all Newbies - need reminding that hard disagreement all the way back up to Kingdom - makes the Community taxon algorithm insist that FIVE should agree - which irritates me every which way)
