Link the story to Game of Thrones and then outrage the fans. Since George R. R. Martin is connected to this operation, I have to believe that was deliberate for reason.*

Don’t associate the good name of Prehistoric Park with this farce. Nigel Marven worked hard to time travel and get his specimens
It’s just marketing. The whole business of the company is “de-extinction”. The main thing they’re known for is trying to bring back mammoths.
They genetically engineered Gray Wolves (Canis lupus) to be physically more like a Dire Wolf (Aenocyon dirus), To me this is not resurrecting Aenocyon, but, as others have said, creating a GMO Canis.
Even if we could truly de-extinct a species, I do not know why the Dire Wolf would be a desirable choice, as it went extinct in prehistoric times, and would be an invasive in any modern ecosystem, this feels more like Jurassic Park than conservation. If I could bring back a species it would be something that went extinct due to overhunting in modern times that still has its ecosystem.
If they’re trying to “save” large mammals, can’t they do bison and pronghorn in the North American prairies?
I’m guessing it’s because it’s easier to create something like a dire wolf than most other extinct species like say the tasmanian tiger.
Easy shouldn’t matter if it serves no purpose. I mean maybe they are practicing for better species, but I have doubts that their technique works for resurrecting a species at all

I actually found it pretty darn funny that they showcased some long-haired mice and claimed it was a step towards resurrecting the woolly mammoth. My housecat has some pretty long teeth (for a housecat), I think I’ll trot him out as a first step towards creating a saber-toothed tiger.
I saw those, too. The longhaired mice seemed more like a designer breed than anything else, and I feel like if those genes they selected for the mice were applied to elephants, which (correct me if I’m wrong) appears to be their plan, they’d still just end up with a hairy African/Asian Elephant, not a mammoth.
It’s weird that Colossal is calling this “de-extinction” when morphology-based taxonomy has been proved to be wrong.
OK, then let’s extirpate ranchers from everywhere except tiny apartments because they carry the disease called plowingupprairieosis.
I’m just really wondering whether anyone working on the Dire Wolf project has ever seen Jurassic Park.
Oh, trust me, I have enough of a beef with the ranchers. They want wolves, coyotes, bison, prairie dogs, ferrets (because prairie dogs), golden eagles, black vultures, sage grouse, and everything else that isn’t a deer, turkey, or cow dead, and I’m so sick of it. Beef is one of my favorite foods and I haven’t eaten it in 2 years because I’m sick of ranchers. I’m sure there are good ones out there, but the loudest are the most annoying.
Overblown hype and stupidity, caused by rich people who are bored. That is my opinion of this. It is only because of social media that this kind of dribble goes viral.
Maybe the world economy crashing and everyone being flung into abject poverty would not be such a bad thing. Then people would stop worrying about this kind of non-essential garbage because they would have to focus all their energy on the real essentials of life and survival.
As long as people have too much time and money, this kind of garbage will continue.
