voice-general, announcing in chat or chat2. you do need permission from an admin but that’s it
Would anyone be interested in a mothing observation stream on Discord for National Moth Week next July? I may be able to set up in a location that has WiFi access.
i think that would be fun.
for what it’s worth, i installed Twitch Studio just to compare its performance vs OBS Studio, and here’s what i see in each when logged into my Twitch account to show chat and other basic stats but not actually streaming:
program | CPU usage | memory usage |
---|---|---|
Twitch Studio | 5-8% | ~725MB |
OBS Studio | 1% | ~310MB (~390 with BTTV/FFZ emotes turned on in chat) |
so if anyone’s having problems streaming to Twitch on an older machine, they may want to try OBS Studio. (There’s also Streamlabs OBS aka SLOBS, but my understanding is that that one will consume even more resources than Twitch Studio.)
fwiw, i didn’t think OBS Studio was particularly difficult to set up. download, install, connect to Twitch, set up a scene with sources, add a stream description, and then click the button to start a stream and another to end it.
This is a really interesting idea and one that I would like to pursue myself. My first concern however is that in streaming other people’s observations one may open one’s self up to possible copyright concerns since technically the photos in the observations and such are not owned by you, and therefore by using them in your channel (hypothetically without permission from each individual observer) you are infringing upon the copyright. There are ways around this I suppose, and if no money was being made off the stream (no donations) then I doubt people would pursue a copyright claim, but all the same that specter would make it difficult to have an organic, worry-free stream. That is, of course, unless iNaturalist endorses such a project (like I think they probably should) and makes a way for it in their Privacy Policy.
Thanks,

this is a legitimate concern, and i don’t think there’s a perfect precedent for judging whether displaying observations as part of an identification stream would or wouldn’t fall under fair use, but just from what i can tell, i think there’s a reasonable case to be made that this would generally fall under fair use. (of course, you never know for sure until the specific case is litigated.) if in doubt, you could always filter for just observations that have specific licenses and whose media assets have specific licenses.
After reviewing the relevant fair use information I think I am inclined to agree with you, because a stream would essentially be for the purposes of commentary or analysis in an educational format. The idea is still alive, ha ha.

Fair use would apply here, I think. After all, video games are copyrighted, and most Twitch streams feature them.
