Now, if I was at my place in the Dominican Republic, I would show you pictures of my fruit trees and other plantings. I would rather copy the locals with their passion for flowers than copy my expat neighbors with their passion for lawns and paved patios.

Many Dominicans are more worried about destruction starting at the Haitian border and spreading east. Charcoal poaching is a thing.

In the Dominican Republic, one frequently observed orchid is the Philippine Ground Orchid, Spathiglottis plicata, which I have found even along mountain trails away from human habitations; another is the Monk Orchid, Eulophia maculata.

You seemed so fond as to consider the DR a “heart home” of sorts.

I am sorry something has soured you but please do not dismiss entire peoples. As someone here attempted to offer, there are better and worse people in all corners of the earth.

I hope if your goal remains to get back to the DR that you can do so successfully soon.
