Identification Etiquette on iNaturalist - Wiki

A doubt related to ID etiquettes,

while I was IDing mantises, another identifier told me to not provide IDs if they are not improving/helping (what they meant was that no need to ID if the observer has made an accurate enough ID, or else ppl will think youre IDing solely for the number and not making educated IDs)

for example, an observation is IDed as Genus Hierodula (giant asian mantises) when it was infact Genus statilia, now 2 ppl have IDed it as statilia and the original ID remains, is it not right to add a supportive ID which im sure of so that the observation has a new corrected ID

im aware its not the best explanation so pls ask me if a certain point is unclear

Add your ID if it makes a difference. Also OK to make it 3 agree, because sometimes profiles are deleted - then you would still have ‘2 agree’. Some taxon specialists ID all the obs they look at = seen that one, next. Your ID, to ID or not, is your choice. If people think … that is their problem, not yours.

I mostly prefer my ID to move the CID, since there are so many waiting either Unknown or Needs ID.

yeaa makes sense, it is their problem indeed!

there are many cool mantis observations that I refrained from refining the CID of, because of this. I know I ID responsibly so shoudlnt be a problem anyways

So long as you follow your notifications to withdraw if needed - not a problem. We have a couple of new settings which they could use if notifications of your (broad or confirming ?) IDs are their problem ?
