Brought up the inconsistency/tautology between names, transliteration vs. translation of names, and - since these spiders are not endemic to Japan - how priority of origin for names should be determined. I also mentioned coming across several sites where the spider has an English common name using English vocabulary – so I’m not sure why that isn’t the default instead of a transliterated name from Japanese.
There are plenty of species in Korea with a Korean common name but no English common name so when I chat with people in English I use the Korean common name. The examples of ‘Joro Spider’ and ‘Kogane-gumo Spider’ suggest that I should start adding Korean names transliterated into English since they are being used by English speakers. I haven’t been adding names like that, but if it’s the policy that others are using on iNaturalist perhaps I should reconsider …
