There we go, hit the milestone I’d intended to this weekend. 200k IDs
do you sit or stand at your computer? Might the dizziness be better the way you hold your head when standing (and then able to move a little and ‘fidget’)?
Congratulations!
Sometimes I sit at a table; other times I sit reclined on a bunch of pillows in bed with the computer on my lap. I don’t have a standing desk. What I need to do is not stay on the computer so continuously; take a lot of breaks to walk around. I get sucked into the IDing though. I should set a timer on my phone to remind myself to get up.
Well that is one advantage of a standing desk. You move around. Fetch a field guide, make tea, go into the garden to check ‘my’ leaf against someone’s iNat obs. I use a convenient bookshelf / room divider - right height and with a view to the garden (mountain, and grateful that the fire is out on our side)
I passed observation 4000 today!

Ah! Just realized I could use the bar! It’s usually the depository for cameras and binoculars and a fruit bowl filled with numerous bags of pearlite with seeds my mom is trying to sprout. I can temporarily move that stuff to the dining table (where we usually use the computer).
I wanted something special for my observation number 3333, and I actually found something unique.
Here in Germany, it’s almost impossible to discover anything new unless you use DNA barcoding and search for cryptic species. Nevertheless, some interesting discoveries can be made, such as this mutation of Anemonoides nemorosa (= Anemone nemorosa) with a giant flower:
For more pictures and information, see the corresponding observation:
Nine years of using iNaturalist and I have my first species with 100 observations:
If you had asked me in 2015 to guess which species I would upload 100 observations of first, I would never have guessed that it would be a millipede. I mainly only see them in one part of the city but they have a flash of color and don’t move too quickly, meaning I almost always hunker down to photograph at least one whenever I came across them.
Nicely captured - pairs of legs per segment is millipede - trying to remember that.
Wow! I’ve never seen such a mutation before. Very cool!
Also, if you want to find iNat firsts in Germany without DNA barcoding, I highly recommend sampling interstitial habitats or looking for copepods, it has worked for me. :D
Yup… me too
Finally managed to push my identifications up past 10 000 during the CNC. I tried my best to match the number of obs and ID’s this year, but life happens and some lovely family time took precedence. I will get back to helping with ID’s, lots of work to do after the challenge.
I have managed to be half way through my all-yearly goals (> 1000 observations of > 500 species + 40.000 IDs)
7,000 observations!
와우~ 축하합니다!
Thank you!
A tidy 3K IDs for my Cape Pensinsula for CNC.
And yet. As I clear a page … obs trickle in! Those ‘multiple sp in one obs’ now split to multiple obs - and still within Needs ID for CNC Be careful what you wish for, it may come true.
