limiting the number of changes for new users would not be unreasonable imo

As I said above, usernames and profile pics get more scrutiny because they appear on other users’ content and because they can appear so many times on the site. If I changed my username to “votefor[candidatex]”, that would instantly appear on all 50k+ of my observations, the 130k+ observations I’ve IDed, many more that I’ve commented on, every flag I’ve made or commented on, plus every journal post I’ve written, etc. To me that’s basically spam and quite different from profile text, which one has to intentionally go to in order to read, and it resides in one place on the site.

I could get behind banning overtly political content, including openly promoting non-nature related social “causes.” This is a nature site, not a socio-political soapbox

I doubt this kind of joke name is a problem, my concern was names like “Trump2024”, “Harris 2024”, “Kennedy 2028”, ect

I’ve also seen such stuff in the profile page of many, many users. I really don’t like people pushing their beliefs no matter how right or wrong they are on the profile. For example, posting about rights for X people(s) is a great thing if done correctly however having it in all large bold letters on your profile defeats the purpose and I see it as gross behavior ohhh everyone look at me I’m such a warrior for people’s rights.
Now, I do want to say that it is important to support such things just in the correct format, time, and place while having accurate ferver, dedication, and moderation. I’m not specifically going against anything at all.

100% agree. It’s fine to have political opinions, but like everything there’s a time and place for that stuff, and virtue signaling about your pet social/political cause on inaturalist of all places does nothing to actually advance that cause, and its only real purpose is to make you feel good about yourself.
