This fits well with something I have wanted to see.
in the world of moths there are unknown unknowns where something is new and unique, but there are also known unknowns which are documented species that have never been described and accepted under peer review. It would be nice to be able to link those known unknowns in a fashion that would allow observers or identifiers to put them with their cohorts even if they did not have a scientific name.

Observation fields are current functionality, often used for these purposes, and are likely easier to use than linked observations would be. Any user can make one (though check if one you want already exists…).

So no centralized solution for handling such cases, but a number of options to choose from depending on one’s needs.
