Because times changed. Our child did not go out unsupervised 30 years ago because the neighbors next door were on drugs. The traffic in front of the house was high speed also. One didn’t need to be a helicopter parent to realize that it was not safe. One can easily take a child to a safe place on a regular basis which we did.
