Not sure where you’re coming from here. My yard is a small place that I’ve used (and enjoyed) for years. It works perfectly, especially if you create a pin (or pins).

if you use chrome, i’d be happy to help you with the metadata tool. it seems intimidating, but it isn’t.

Obviously, you are careful with both location and accuracy with your place, but most observers are not. GPSs are inherently inaccurate, such that places will not index observations whose locations fall outside the boundary or if the accuracy circle breaks the bounding box. Both common issues with small places. My guess is that if you invited 20 random observers to your garden who capture observations using a phone - you’d miss 50% of those observations.

It was suggested that people use traditional projects for small places. From https://help.inaturalist.org/en/support/solutions/articles/151000176246-common-collection-project-use-cases

For short duration bioblitzes with known observers, I prefer not to use places. I get 100% of the observations if I filter on the date and observers.

I use a phone app for geotagging my Olympus photos. Typical GPS log:

It works well enough, but i do have to verify that all my observations were indexed in a place based collection project. I often have to move 5% of my observations in small places.

Not if I helped them curate their own observations by creating a custom pin for my place. They would need to create this custom pin only once. They would need to remember to add their observations to a traditional every single time.

Besides, I expect device location accuracy to get better not worse.

What I appreciate so much is how your scan project is organized. The single journal post with the site visits link list. And since the bio-blitz’s are occurring at multiple places it makes sense to use a traditional to have the team apart from any specific place. It does mean the leader probably needs to do more curation (or each member needs to remember to join and add)… but it makes sense how it’s set up and it’s really cool.

Only members are allowed to add observations and we’ve been doing this long enough that people just add their observations without prompting, so its pretty streamlined.

yah, that’s awesome.
