I’m not sure I gave enough experience to say–I am usually in an end-of-semester frenzy when I want to be out in the swamp with the spring ephemerals. It looks like phenology might be better than morphology for these two? Which is annoying but I guess a little better than waiting for a canopy gap to watch a Nabalus (Prenanthes) bloom.
I feel like I have a rough time with Picea whenever I go north, glad it’s not just me being weak.
I think there’s a larger point lurking here about generic splits as well as species delineation–get a good range of samples before proposing changes! Which can be monumentally difficult but acting on insufficient samples is IMO a big contribution to unnecessary taxonomic churn, like sinking Hepatica into Anemone and then pulling it back out.
