I would say some kind of lichen complex.

It’s a good book, but mostly relevant to eastern US. Here’s a link describing two ways to process the acorns. I haven’t tried it myself, but supposedly the flavor differs between the two.

I don’t think so.

Apparently, cold water leaching is the best way to leach acorns of their bitterness (if not the slowest).

But if you have water restrictions due to drought?
After Cape Town faced day zero for municipal water, we still use grey water from our showers to flush. No endless stream of clean water flowing thru our cistern.
