No, don’t say that! The more people who are scared of lobster mushrooms, the more for me! ;)

Honestly, though, I think the greatest dangers lobster mushrooms pose is that people will sometimes eat them when they’ve gone squishy and grey because surely they’re still edible…

I am not sure although I would assume that cooking would destroy the parasite eggs

Not only squishy but maggot filled as well. Hey, a little extra protein…rice with eyes!

Some people roast and eat the acorn weevils they find in their acorns. Maybe I’ll be brave enough to try that someday…

Thank you for this post! Very interesting topic to me. I forage on a daily basis, living on several acres in the east Texas Piney Woods. This is a subject my husband brings up frequently because he knows when I’m out on our land, I “eat as I go” and it always worries him that I’m going to be poisoned or get sick from eating something a feral hog urinated on! Considering this has been a natural habit of mine for years and I haven’t gotten sick or died yet, I’m grateful to see the input of others, especially more scientific minds, on the possibilities of becoming ill from foraging. Certainly, certain plants and mushrooms do not get eaten until I am indoors and they have been washed, or prepped or cooked properly. But, there are still plenty of times that I just eat my way through the woods. Thank you for the education and food for thought!

Living in Alaska, I’ve seen that foraging requires some research to distinguish between poisonous plants and fungi (not much of a fan of eating fungi myself, so that isn’t much of an issue.)
I have grown up being told to not to eat certain species in the area but I haven’t heard much insight on contamination, parasites, pathogens, etc.

Whether the quote is true or not, none of the people I know who forage have ever gotten sick from it that I am aware of. Not even the ones who don’t know what they are doing. I don’t eat anything I don’t know. To think commercially grown foods are always safe is a mistake.
Basically everything is trying to kill us, some are better at it than others, plan accordingly.
