What is this - iNaturalist and generative AI?

I think responding here is relevant to the overall theme of the thread, where people fear losing control over their contributions to the site and how those are used. I’m also leery of GenAI and would like to have the possibility to opt-out (or choose to opt-in) if some form of it is ever implemented on the site. I’ll just make this one additional response to points raised and then leave it to others to continue the conversation.

No, but as a fairly active member of the Forums I have never seen this requested (if I missed it, please feel free to point me to where it’s been asked for). Nor have I ever seen anyone request the ability to avoid sending data to GBIF while retaining a permissive license such as CC-BY. It doesn’t even really make sense – if your license allows re-use, why and on what basis would you want to block sending the data to a specific external partner? I like iNaturalist because it offers so many possibilities to customise and do things the way you want, and over the years, they have been very active in seeking community input and responding to requests. They can’t address every conceivable use case and I don’t think it’s fair to criticise for not providing features that have not been requested.

This seems like splitting hairs to me – and again, I don’t recall seeing a request on the Forum for a more “sticky” opt-out – but if it is an issue, you can avoid suggestions entirely by customising your settings in the new app. Just use the conventional camera in the app or upload from your camera roll, and click on “Search” rather than “ID with AI”:
