Yes, identifying "unknown" observations matters! And can be rewarding!

Just FYI you can respond to multiple users in a single post (you can highlight what someone has written and click “quote” or “copy quote”. This is often preferable to making a string of individual comments like above as it helps keep threads cleaner and easier for others to read. Users can also get slowed or temporarilily locked out of Discourse if they make too many comments in a short period of time.

Could you link to this extension?

As I mentioned right before you, when I do small stints of IDing (that isn’t just going through unknowns), I specifically aim for ‘Kingdom Plantae (Plants)’, so if it’s not IDd to at least this point, I’m not going to see it. If it’s at this point, I can at the very least put it into class, family, and usually right down to species (if it’s in my local area). If it’s sitting at ‘Unknown’ though because someone thought “it’s silly to just put it to ‘Plant’”, then I won’t see it and it’ll stay at ‘Unknown’.

I hear what you’re saying, as I said I don’t mind ppl doing it, there’s obviously value to it… I just think that IDing something as ‘plant’ is the same as IDing a bird as ‘animal’

Not to worry. You will NEVER run out of obs IDed as plant. Alternatively - if you have / do - then try another location.

We make progress. Thank you. Another 50 done. At this rate another month should clear it

What a great idea. I’m going through an incredibly stressful time, and going through unknowns was great stress relief today. I am a birder and found some birds hidden in there that I got right to species, and a really cool observation that started as just eggs, and the observation was updated with the eggs hatched: ended up being ladybug larvae! A worthy use of my time.

Glad you found some relief from what you’re dealing with!

I started doing more and more ID’ing to get myself away from doomscrolling – it’s a much better use of my time

Inat ended up replacing all of the time I spent (and then some) on social media previously haha. Much better use of time.

I jumped in to bump up a few. Not necessarily to species, but at least a little closer.

If you can ID something to ‘Monocot’, ‘Dicot’, ‘Conifer’, ‘Fern’, that’s great, but ‘Plant’ is still better than ‘Unknown’.

I see that even in Aotearoa, where there’s some very enthusiastic botanists IDing things, there’s still 10,286 labelled simply as ‘Kingdom Plantae (Plants)’. Maybe that could be some entertainment some day.

Several hours ago (I usually ID in the morning, but had to leave for church) I found an observation of a tree with no leaves I could distinguish and IDed it as Tracheophyta. I was pretty sure it’s either a conifer or a dicot, but couldn’t tell which. There are also some monocots with leaf shapes that are more typical of dicots and even a few which are net-veined, and some ferns look decidedly unferny (though not infernal). I’ve come across something IDed as a flowering plant, but recognized its fruit as that of a kind of conifer; checking CV against Wikipedia, I put it in Taxaceae.

still hoping we will earn an annotation for conifer ‘fruit’
