A thought on the name of the City Nature Challenge (CNC) 2025

I just got the CNC 2025 email and wondered if “Nature in the City Challenge” (NitCC) might be a SEO (search engine optimisation), choice.

Before using an acronym I often check it aginast https://www.acronymfinder.com/Slang/CNC.html to see if it has some significance in a larger community. “Computer Numerically Controlled” is almost always referred to as CNC and the Internet having been built by the sort of people that are interested in Computers, (and often in machining) there are probably more people in that social domain than in iNat. [unverified conjecture but https://ddg.gg/cnc and google anacdotally support my question.]

I hope that this thought is beneficial to iNat and not just an example of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_triviality

there’s rumour of a hidden Dark Curation of people who complained about the acronyms.. word to the wise

Dark Curation must have a thick file. I despise the alphabet soup the general public seems to thrive on.
Another word to the wise would be to be careful bringing up such darkness.

maybe the alphabet soup is a recidivism of a darker word salad!

Rumors Abound! And so many willing to spread them!

I do like that name better.

I would not pick NitCC because

  • I am lazy and it takes longer to type
  • It would be nitpicking

CNC is hosted on iNat, but organised from outside iNat.
When the dust has settled from CNC - you could approach the organisers.

Since the map and the list are unwieldy to use - mine is called
City Nature Challenge 2025: City of Cape Town

If all the projects were consistently called
CNC 25: City of Cape Town
the banners would not smother the map, quite so thoroughly
and the list would be easier to scan thru.
I did try.
