I am not looking for the periodicals, unfortunately I am/was nowhere near their range, but I have never found a cicada on my own. When I was younger, my dad collected their bodies and kept them on his dashboard. I love cicadas and would love to find them to photograph, I can hear them but am having trouble actually locating them based on sound alone. Any tips on their habits/preferred perching areas from more experienced bug finders that I could learn from?
I tend to find my annual cicadas on tree branches, but I can sometimes find them climbing up tree trunks when they are going to molt into adults (which is happening around now for me at least [I live in Ohio, USA]).
Otherwise, I think you’d just have to be lucky to have one land on your house.
