In annotations, evidence of presence, I am wondering what to label a desert bighorn bed. There is scat in it, which I labeled separately. The ground is scraped by the bighorn’s hooves and a shallow dish-shaped depression marks where it’s body lay on an arid ridge. Construction or track or both? Death Valley National Park.
I’ve observed a moose bed, deer scrape, and other such evidence. In each case, I’ve left the annotation blank since none of the values seemed to be a match (based on the accompanying tool-tip). I really don’t know if that’s the right thing to do.
I would think it is a Track.
As with hoof prints that leave an indentation on the ground is a Track.
A ‘negative’ space, equivalent to a burrow = construction.
Track is meant for ‘foot’ prints.
?
I think a “track” is generally unintentional by the animal and “construction” is intentional
iNat’s definitions of annotations can be found here:
Or by mousing over.
The relevant ones are:
-
Construction (within Animalia): Something created by an animal, made with or excavated from other materials. Examples of things that are Constructions: spider web, burrow, nest or hive, caddisfly larva casing, egg sac or egg case. Examples of things that are not Constructions: coral reef, mollusk shell, hermit crab shell, galls.
-
Track: (within Animalia) Impression in ground or snow made by an organism
Based on those, I’d probably go with “Construction” since the bed seems more like it is excavated and a shallow burrow than an impression which would just be formed by pressure, not intentional scraping. But I also might just not annotate.
