Are annotations used for AI?

I was wondering are annotations currently used for compuvison ?
For example for selecting photo’s that are trained on?

I can imagine that if there are enough photos, it would make sense to select the most varied set possible in terms of life stage, gender, organism, leaf color, GPS, observer, camera model, etc.

Not to my knowledge. But perhaps they do in some way and i just don’t know?
