Are you preaching to the choir? (poll about your conversion rates)

You love iNaturalist. You preach about it to any human who will listen!

What are your conversion rates when it comes to getting people to join the platform?

  • 75% to 100%. You’re very convincing!
  • 50% to 74%. At least half of the people that you talk to, end up joining iNaturalist.
  • 10% to 49%. Some of the people that you talk to, get curious and join iNaturalist.
  • 0% to 9%. You talk about iNaturalist all the time, but very few people actually join.

They don’t necessarily keep using it, though. The people I’ve convinced to join have posted about 100 observations and then lost interest.

I tend to gauge by interest, but I’ve been quite successful with it in a one-on-one setting. Probably upwards of 75%, the few times where I’ve been told otherwise was because they had already made an account previously haha.

The proudest achievement is getting a friend of mine who was previously scared of insects to make an account which helped them slowly lose their phobia. They’ve been fairly active ever since! Shoutout to @anothermind !

Unless we’re talking about my Botany class, then I have no clue how many of the listeners wound up signing up for an iNat account after my lecture.

In terms of approaching it, for me, a lot of times I share how I interact with the app and go from there. Sharing photos I’ve taken and having conversations about our shared interests regarding nature and building that bridge towards their interest of iNaturalist.

I really don’t know. I did definitely introduce students to iNaturalist (required for class) and a few are still active at least occasionally. I do talk it up and a few people seem to follow up. I hope more than 10% have joined. I hope more than 2% or so have stayed with it, but I I wouldn’t bet much on it.

0% I want people to come to iNat, because they are interested.
I do encourage newbies by IDing obs from ‘today’ and helping them thru the learning curve that is iNat.

Most naturalists to whom I mention the app already know it.

The one time I told somebody who didn’t yet know, I was on a flight to Malaysia. Sitting next to me was a Canadian photographer who loved looking for snakes, and snake-watching in the jungle was his intention for the trip. The guy was surprised when I showed him the iNaturalist map feature.

No matter how hard I keep trying, I cannot convince my mom to join, despite her having some cool plant observation photos that I’m very jealous of from her trip to France. Also, my Peruvian friend doesn’t want to join despite living in a mega diverse country with tons of amazing species. :(

I got my grandpa to join though, and he always phones me excitedly when he has uploaded an observation, asking if I have already seen it, and proudly telling me what it is. :)
