Backyard biodiversity count is at 2499!

I can’t believe my backyard species count is almost at 2500. I wouldn’t have thought it possible when I first started submitting observations from my 50’ x 100’ native plant garden. I suspected I might be able to find a few hundred, and that was hopeful, but new species keep on coming. if anyone’s interested, my backyard project is here

And here it is on the landscape, a tiny speck of natural habitat teeming with life. Can you tell I’m in love with my yard??!

Very impressive list!!

very impressive, I have approx. the same gardensize - but I ”only” have 1530 species so far - so, a long way to go…

The number of people helping with identifications is a good one, too: 1111 people :)

And what are you doing to convert your neighbors?

Inspiring, Russ! Especially in a suburban landscape. Did you convert your yard all at once, or was it a process over time?

I hope to get somewhere near your achievement some day with my own yard. In about 2.5 years with mostly natural regeneration/colonization of native plants I reached over 500 species https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/quarter-acre-nature. Each year I add a few new plants to increase the diversity and the goal is to reduce the “lawn” (mostly clover & strawberry) to the septic field. I have been hesitant to do too much at once as we still need to convince our neighbours to let us kill/remove the buckthorn hedgerow between our properties.

That’s genuinely amazing! I hope that some day my own family’s (much smaller) native yard can reach even a fraction of that species count.

Russ does a lot! For example:

My home garden project:

Flatbush Gardener’s Garden

As of now (I have a backlog of thousands of photos to process and upload):

Unlike many other such projects, mine is a small (large by NYC standards) urban garden. The plantable area is only 2,400 square feet, 222.6 square meters, or .055 acres.

Fight the lawn!

Very cool list btw.

Cool project, thanks for the link!
