Best way to remove orthopteran/orthopteroid genitalia?

Hi all,

I am interested to learn how to either dissect/remove the aedeagus of male crickets or roaches. What is the best method to do it? I have seen many resources cover beetles, but lacking in the orthopteroids. Does the dissecting methods translate well over to orthopteroids?

Any advice or direction is much appreciated!

unless you’re collecting them, i wonder if it’s necessary to do dissection to see the aedeagus? just in my own experience recording videos of insects, the males seem to readily extend their aedeagi when motivated to do so.

if you must dissect, here’s some previous discussion on the topic: https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/genitalia-of-grasshopper/45751

I’m working on an obscure orthopteroid order and I am practicing with either roaches or crickets as they have similarly complex aedeagi. That’s why I am asking. It really to be familiar with such anatomy and morphology.
