I believe this is actually a hybrid between the original species @nilshelstrom posted, and a similar species with a red coloration.

The large mouth also seems like good evidence that this is an ambush predator.

After Hours of tedious research I found a family which has had a wildcam up since the 1970s and actually snapped a picture of the (what I believe) other species. [red]

It’s also hybridizing with the native species, such as @giannamaria pointed out.

I saw a red one on TV at Hogmanay last year!

The species with red coloration is extremely invasive. The word “noxious” has been used.
