This is an area for Inaturalist Birders and Birdwatchers to ask questions or talk.

My personal opinion is that a birder is someone who goes out and actively looks for birds while a birdwatcher is more casual.

But anyone who isn’t an ornithologist is casual/amateur.

I wouldn’t say that. I don’t think you have to be an ornithologist to be a birder.

Oh, OK, so that means you have to be obsessed with birds in your opinion to be a “birder?”

If you’re documenting birds through eBird, iNat photos, or detailed field notes then you’re a citizen scientist contributing to our knowledge of birds even if you don’t have a degree/job as an ornithologist.

OK, is there a dictionary meaning to it or it’s an opinion oriented thing?

I’m not sure what a dictionary would say. This is just my personal opinion.
