I love their fluffy white pantaloons (undertail coverts) that they fluff out when they are doing display flights.

Wow, thatās interesting. It still doesnāt seem enough of a ring to be named that, but good to know itās not complete nonsense.
I still maintain they should have been called ring-BILLED duck - a trait that can seen by even the most amateur birder.
Apparently, the first Ring-necked Duck was described by an amateur naturalist in England based off of a damaged (and out of range) specimen brought in by a hunter, so itās probable that its distinctive bill was either missing or disfigured to the point where the ring wasnāt visible.
Iām not anywhere close to that! Iāve got about 18 species since January 1st, not counting observations I made that were only signs of birds. There isnāt a lot to see here in Alaska during the winter anyways and itās been especially cold. Also, I havenāt been getting out to good areas for birds either.
Proudly at 125 since Jan 1st! I really hope to get to the 2 or 3 hundreds by December, which might be a big ask, but Texas has 600+ species, so maybe Iāll get lucky!
Favorite Observations: Northern Harrier (Jan + March), Roseate Spoonbill (March), and White-eyed Vireo (March)

So far I have photographed 52 species of birds, but overall saw about 60ā¦
Also, Iām happy with my 26K + bird IDs made this year, getting me all the way to top 30 in Europe.
But, Iām sure the summer will be fantastic. You have some wonderful wildlife there.
Wow, 2 or 3 hundreds would be brilliant. I was very pleased to get 233 last year, but that included a couple of trips abroad, including one to Alaska. I donāt think Iāll get close to that this year.
Sadly, there wanāt just one site. I used different things:
- iNat to keep my records.
- Excel to manipulate the csv files for each month that I downloaded from iNat and to create the table.
- Venngage for the Venn Diagramme template.
- Photoshop to put the whole thing together.
It was a load of messing about and Iām sure there are simpler ways of doing things, but Iām not sure Iād bother again 
.

Iāve got 133 bird species so far, for 2026, partly because of the Great Backyard Bird Count. I havenāt really set a goal yet, since Iāve got loads of exams coming up, but itās somewhere around 200 or 300 species.
As for observations other than birds, 91 till date. So close yet so far from reaching 100!

Saw a lovely Australian Flame Robin. The mountain was cloudy and cold so they didnāt fly away as much as usual.
