Has anyone else had trouble accessing the website “2014 BONAP North American Plant Atlas (NAPA)” (access via: https://bonap.org)? I have used this resource for years when botanizing and learning plant biogeography. As of today, it seems the entire website has been removed, and I had previously accessed it within the last two weeks.
If not, how confusing. If so, maybe they just became an org?
From…
http://bonap.org/
…I attempt to get to NAPA (link from website copied below):
http://bonap.net/napa
…but that link redirects me to the dead link:
https://bonap.net/lander
Many other links on the site do not work. Some still do, however.
I tried the following, but it too does not work:
http://bonap.org/napa
you should probably contact the folks at BONAP to find out what’s going on (http://www.bonap.org/contact.html). there are a lot of things that have stopped working or are working to a lesser degree since the latest political regime in the USA.
their latest news blurb (http://www.bonap.org/BONAP%20News.html) also says that an improved website would be up in early 2025. so maybe they’re migrating stuff around, although I’m surprised it looks like they’ve abandoned their bonap.net domain (as of 2025-03-25) rather than keeping it at least for a while to redirect to whatever their new domain might be.
BONAP is essentially John Kartesz’s passion project (John and Misako Nishino, the data manager, are the only staff AFAIK) and has no connection to the US federal government. My guess would be that they’re tangling with a software update that did not go as well as anticipated.
Something to do with HTTPS?
https://bonap.org doesn’t work, but http://bonap.org does.
It’s great that the Internet allows people to create and maintain such passion projects, but the flip side is that they can be fragile since they’re run by only a few people :(
The biology world often feels a lot like https://xkcd.com/2347/
It’s always been this way. The main site is hosted under the .org domain and the lists and range images were all under the .net domain.
I access the maps directly on the .net domain. A few moments ago, I did a Karma search for “bonap Opuntia” and the first result takes me directly to,
https://bonap.net/Napa/TaxonMaps/Genus/County/Opuntia
No problem.
Maybe the issue is resolved or it may involve only the .org domain location?
