The file selector precludes kml files being selected.
Step 1:
On Safari for iPad, navigate to the New Place URL
Step 2:
Click the choose file button in the form, and browse to a folder with a .kml extension (Ensure file extensions are shown if required, google maps defaults to exporting file.kml.xml)
Step 3:
Try to select the KML file, this fails and the KML file(s) are greyed.
