I have located one along the Powder River in Montana, but no photos yet. Various Internet searches indicate that they are very rare. ML
An uncommon species in Montana. And yes, it is now quite rare for this species to use tree cavities. This MT agency (see link below) pulls observations from iNaturalist. If you do not want to wait until you have a photograph, you might want to report this to these folks in writing.

Thanks, I am in contact with that agency. Just did two morning and two evening 50 minute video session, with lots of overhead fly-bys; but no activity at the known cavity. Seemed to be some well before sunset arrival activity at bigger trees 100 M away.
Would take several other observers, with better video equipment, to cover all the potential area. And cooler temperatures would be nice. ML
