Common tern preparation for flight

This summer, I was able to observe the common garin colony of Île-Tudy, in Brittany. I noticed that before taking off, the terns raised their wings vertically for about 2 seconds. Does anyone have any idea what they could do?

Not bird knowledgeable but I would like to make a guess: that it is to assess wind. (Now I will wait to see if I am right!)

I always hear that you should warm up before strenuous exercise. :)

I found @gatorhawk @sdjbrown and @thebeachcomber in the top 100 list for Identifiers of Sterninae.

I am hopeful one of the three, another of the 97 less familiar to me as Forum participant names, or someone here who knows will give us the answer (though now that I see @m_whitson 's response, I feel that one much more likely).
